CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (7-8) fell to Boston College (7-6) by a score of 64-53 in its final non-conference game of the year.
Maine featured four scorers in double-figures.
Fanny Wadling finished with career-highs of 11 points and eight rebounds while
Julie Brosseau matched a career-high, finishing with 11 points for the second-straight game.
Isabel Hernandez Pepe gave Maine a second half surge off the bench as she netted a career-high 10 points with six rebounds.
Blanca Millan rounded out Maine's double-digit performances with 10 points to go along with eight boards.
The Black Bears were hampered by a pair of tough quarter stretches. Boston College outscored Maine by a total of 46-22 in the second and third quarters. The Eagles held the advantage in the paint, 38-24, and were led by freshman Georgia Pineau's 16 points and seven rebounds.
Maine finished the game 19-for-59 from the floor (32.2%), including a 4-for-19 mark from 3-point range (21.1%). The Eagles went 25-for-53 from the field but managed just a 1-for-12 showing in the fourth quarter.
Maine, which has become accustomed to getting out to a quick start in its recent contests, found itself down 10-0 to the Eagles with six minutes gone in the first quarter.
The Black Bears settled and were able to rattle off an 8-0 run, closing the gap to a pair.
Kirsten Johnson gave the Black Bears a boost off the bench as she converted down low with Maine's first bucket of the game. A pair of turnovers by Boston College turned into four more quick points for the Black Bears who trailed 12-10 after the opening period.
The Eagles, who outscored Maine 28-13 in the second quarter, lifted their lead out to eight early in the second before Brosseau stuck a triple to chip the lead to five.
Boston College answered with an 11-0 run, pushing its lead out to 16 with 2:30 left in the half.
Brosseau knocked down her second 3-pointer of the period to end the run but the Eagles came right back, this time with a 6-0 sprint, to elevate the lead to 19. Boston College, which shot 76.9-percent from the field in the second quarter, carried a 40-23 advantage into the break.
After a dismal second quarter for Maine, the Eagles continued to stretch their lead in the third. Boston College ran its lead out to 28 with a minute left in the third, helped by a 14-2 advantage over the 10-minutes in the paint.
Maine's fourth quarter lineup found the stride for the Black Bears as it was able to climb back into the game, outscoring the Eagles 21-6 in the final period. Trailing by 29, a jumper from Hernandez Pepe began a 12-0 run. After a pair of Boston College free throws, Hernandez Pepe knocked down a jumper. Maine went on to close the game on a 9-1 run but it would not be enough as the Eagles held on for a 64-53 victory.
The Black Bears are back in action on Jan. 4 when they open America East play at Vermont.
