STOCKTON, California -- Maine field hockey begins play in the America East playoffs with an opening round matchup against California on Friday November 4 at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). The Black Bears earned the no. 2 seed in the east division with a 6-2 record in conference play, Cal earned the no. 3 seed in the west division with a 1-5 record in America East.
Maine and Cal have met previously this season. The Cal Bears travelled to Orono and came away victorious 3-1.
Danielle Aviani scored the first goal of the game six minutes in to give Maine a 1-0 lead. Cal then rattled off three unanswered goals from Emily Catan, Katrina Carter and Keats Iwanaga. Cal's Lexi Collins made her first appearance in goal, made three saves and didn't allow a goal in 45 mintues of play.Â

The Black Bears are coming off of a 2-0 week, with wins over UNH (5-1) and Vermont (4-1). The Black Bears are 3-2 in their last five games and have won two games in a row since Oct. 9 and Oct. 14. Maine's
Brianna Ricker earned America East rookie of the week with three goals in two conference games.
Emma Cochran didn't allow a goal in 70 minutes of play and had six saves.Â

California finished the year with a 4-12 record overall. They earned their only America East conference win against UC Davis (5-1). Melina Moore leads the Cal Bears with 15 points scored on the season (six goals and three assists) and Janaye Sakkas is the other double digit scorer on Cal with 12 points (six goals). Kori Griswold has started and played in 11 games this season as goalie of the Cal Bears. She has a 3-8 record with a 2.73 goals against average.
