Field Hockey Falls to Cal 3-1

Black Bears suffer fifth loss of the season

Box Score ORONO, Maine -- Maine field hockey suffered their fifth loss of the season, 3-1 to Cal on Sunday at the University of Maine field hockey complex. Danielle Aviani scored the lone goal for the Black Bears on the day, her sixth of the season.

Cal started the game without a goalie in net as Kori Griswold was out with an injury as their only goal keeper, Mara Guitierrez started the game as the kicker for the first 24 minutes of the first half. 

Maine had a breakaway opportunity early in the first half, Danielle Aviani found the wide open net to give the Black Bears a 1-0 early lead.

Cal came storming back, with an aggressive attack Emily Catan found the back of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. 

Lexi Collins a back/midfielder for the Cal Bears came in as a goalie with a little over 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Golden Bears outshot Maine 9-4 in the first half, they also held the advantage on corners 3-1. 

Katrina Carter gave Cal the lead 14 minutes into the second half after capitalizing on a rebound, the Golden Bears jumped ahead 2-1.

Thirteen minutes later, Cal earned a penalty stroke and Keats Iwanaga gave the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead.

Lexi Collins earned the win and Emma Cochran received the loss.

Maine returns to action next week as they host UMass Lowell on October 20 at 3:00 p.m.
