Stypulkowski and Balzano Lead Baseball Past UMPI 6-0

ORONO, Maine – Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 6-0 win over UMPI on Tuesday evening at Mahaney Diamond. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) had a pair of hits and stole three bases for the Black Bears in the win.
Maine improves to 12-19 on the season with the win, while UMPI falls to 4-10.
Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Balzano reached on a bunt single, stole second and third and scored when Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) grounded out.
The Black Bears added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) singled to right field and Stypulkowski followed with a double. Geary scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Cabrera (Miami, Fla.) and Stypulkowski scored when Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) grounded out.
Maine added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Geary reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Stypulkowski followed with a RBI single. Stypulkowski stole second, reached third on a passed ball and scored when Doran singled to center field.
The Black Bears capped the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brett Chappell (Rock Fall, Ill.) singled to left field and scored when Stypulkowski singled to right.
Four Maine pitchers combined on the shutout for the Black Bears. Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) went two innings and allowed two hits while striking out two. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went four innings to earn the win. He improves to 2-3 on the season. Butler allowed just two hits while striking out seven. Jonah Normandeau (Cumberland, Maine) went two innings and allowed just two hits while striking out one. Clay Conaway (Georgetown, Del.) stuck out the side in order in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.
Ghazaleh Sailors went six innings and allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on nine hits while falling to 0-2 on the season. Nate Bowers and Matt Cauchon each pitched a scoreless inning for the Owls.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 18 when it hosts Hartford for an America East series. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 PM.
