Maine Baseball Sweeps Saturday Double Header against Hartford

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine's Baseball team swept the Saturday double-header against the Hartford Hawks at Mahaney Diamond.
With the two wins today, Maine improves their record to 14-20 on the season and 4-6 in America East play, while Hartford drops to a 12-22 overall record with a 5-7 America East record.
In the first game of the Saturday double-header, Maine was led by a strong pitching performance from Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) who went seven innings allowing six hits, three unearned runs, two walks and two strike outs earning a no-decision.
Maine started the game by allowing three quick first inning runs to give Hartford an early 3-0 lead.
The Black Bears struck back in the bottom of the third with one run, scored by Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) to bring the score to 3-1.
Heath was able to hold the Hawks scoreless after the first inning and retired 18 of 22 batters he faced for the rest of the game. Kyle Gauthier also kept Maine's offense quiet through the middle innings by only allowing two hits.
The Black Bears rallied in the eighth with three hits that scored three runs. Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) started off the inning by reaching first on an error. Then Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled through the left side for a single. Heath forced a walk to load the bases. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) was able to sacrifice fly to right scoring Adam for an RBI to bring the Black Bears to 3-2. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) singled to load the bases for Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario), who was able to double to center driving in two runs to give the Black Bears a 4-3 lead.
Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) was able to hold on in the top of the ninth to preserve the win for the Black Bears. It is Butler's third win of the season.
In the second game of the double-header, it was a seven-inning affair that featured Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) on the mound for Maine. He went five innings allowing four hits and only one run with no walks for his second win of the year.
Hartford struck early again by scoring one run to start the game and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Solid pitching from Courtney and Hartford's starter Sam McKay, left the second and third scoreless for both teams.
Maine responded again with a resilient bottom of the fourth that featured four hits and three runs. Luke Morrill was able to single, which scored Scott Heath to tie the game at one. Brian Doran was able to add to his RBI total for the day by hitting a single that would score two more to bring the lead to 3-1 Maine.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Black Bears were able to score another run off of a Steven Adam double down the right field line to drive in Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.).
Hartford was able to respond in the top of the sixth with three hits that drove in two runs. The Hawks were unable to inflict further damage by leaving two runners on base. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) was able to hold off Hartford in two innings of relief work to secure the win for Maine while capturing his first save of the season.
Maine returns to action Sunday against Hartford at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine at 1 p.m.
