Maine falls to Stony Brook in 12 Innings in Continuation of Saturday's Second Game

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to Stony Brook in 12 innings. The game was started as the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, suspended tied at 7-7 after 10 innings on Saturday and finished on Sunday. Maine falls to 9-18 on the season with the loss and moves to 0-2 in America East play. Stony Brook improves to 18-7 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Stony Brook grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Maxx Tissenbaum, Tanner Nivins and Travis Jankowski all drew walks to load the bases in the bottom of the second inning. Tissenbaum scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.
Maine took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) and Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) had back-to-back singles. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) reached on an error, Lewis moved to third and Martin scored. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) than an RBI single scoring Lewis. Patzalek scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The Seawolves tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Tissenbaum walked and Nivins singled. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Tissenbaum scored when Jankowski struck out, but had to be thrown out at first base. Nivins scored when Joshua Mason singled up the middle.
Maine took the lead once again in the top of the fifth inning. Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) singled to center field. He moved to second on a Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) sacrifice bunt and to third when Lewis single. Connolly scored the go ahead run when Patzalek had a RBI single.
Stony Brook regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. William Carmona singled to left center field. He scored when Stephen Marino singled through the left side. Nivins followed and drew a walk. Marino scored the go ahead run when Jankowski singled to center field.
The Seawolves added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Pat Cantwell singled to right field. He advanced to third on a bunt single by Chad Marshall and scored when Carmona hit an RBI single. Tissenbaum then singled to second base to load the bases. Stephen Marino was hit to drive in Marshall with the seventh run of the game for the Seawolves.
Maine responded in dramatic fashion with three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 7-7. Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) singled to left field and Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to right. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y,) walked to load the bases. Justin Liesenheimer pulled Maine to within a pair of runs when he scored on a wild pitch. Fransoso then hit a two-run double down the right field line scoring Gay and Ian Leisenheimer to knot the score at 7-7.
The game was suspended after 10 innings tied at 7-7 due to darkness and finished on Sunday at noon.
In the 12th inning, Cantwell singled, Marshall was hit and Carmona followed to load the bases. Tissenbaum won the game for the Seawolves when he had a bunt single scoring Cantwell.
Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) started the game for the Black Bears and went 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs on three hits while striking out three. He was replaced by Jonathan Balentina (Willemstad, Curacao) who went 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs on two hits while striking out two. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) went 1.1 inning. He allowed a pair of runs on five hits. A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) pitched the final 3.1 innings for the Black Bears. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out four. He falls to 1-3 on the season.
Tyler Johnson went six inning on the mound for Stony Brook. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits. He struck out six batters. He was replaced by Jasvir Rakkar who went 2.1 innings. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three. Carmona pitched 1.2 innings. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out one. Brandon McNitt pitched the final two innings on Sunday. He allowed just one hit and picks up the win. He improves to 2-1 on the season.
The two teams will now play their regularly scheduled doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
