
Baseball Falls to UNLV in Season-Opener

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped the season-opener 12-4 on Friday night at UNLV. Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.), Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) and Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, Maine) all had a pair of hits for Maine in the game.
The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Beaty singled, stole second and scored when Trent Cook double to right field. Trevor Kirk, who had walked, scored when Rance Roundy singled to right field. UNLV added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning as well. Cash Thomas singled through the left side and Danny Higa followed with a run-scoring double. Higa tallied the fourth run of the game when Kirk singled down the left field line.
Maine got on the board in the top of the third inning. Colin Gay singled to right center field and Taylor Lewis followed with a walk. Both runners advanced a base with a double steal. Gay scored on an error by the catcher.
The Rebels added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cook singled up the middle and Roundy followed with a two-run home run. UNLV added two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scott Berke walked and scored when Higa double. Higa then scored on a Beaty sacrifice fly.
The Rebels then added four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend their lead to 12-1.
The Black Bears answered with three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Pat Thibodeau (Caribou, Maine) singled to third base. Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) followed with a single and Thibodeau advanced to second. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball. Thibodeau scored when Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) struck out swinging and had to be thrown out at first. Ian Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) then singled scoring brother, Justin. Ian scored when Taylor Lewis singled up the middle.
Sophomore Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went three innings and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out three batters in the game. He picks up the loss and falls to 0-1 on the season. Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) replaced Gibbs. He went 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs on four hits while striking out three. Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) relieved Scanlan. Coughlin went 1.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits while fanning a pair.
Tanner Peters went five innings on the mound for UNLV. He allowed one unearned run on three hits. He struck out six batters and picks up the win. Brady Zuniga went 2.2 innings and allowed three runs, all of which were unearned, on three hits while striking out five. Thomas Whitsett pitched the final 1.1 innings. He did not allow a run while surrendering four hits.
The Black Bears and Rebels will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 19. First pitch is slated for 5 PM eastern time.
