Black Bears Drop Series Finale at UNLV 8-2

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped the series finale 8-2 to UNLV on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas, Nev. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) went 1-for-3 with a triple, run scored and RBI.
Maine struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) singled up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) grounded out.
UNLV answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Hunter Beaty doubled to center field before Trent Cook and Rance Roundy drew back-to-back walks. Brandon Bayardi followed with a grand slam, giving the Rebels a 4-1 lead.
Maine pulled to within two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Martin tripled and scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled up the middle.
UNLV answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Cash Thomas walked and Richie Jimenez singled. Both runners advanced a base on the throw. Thomas scored when Travis Feiner singled and Jimenez scored when Remington Pullin grounded into a double play.
The Rebels added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jimenez walked and Feiner followed with a double to right field, sending Jimenez to third base. He scored when Casey Sato hit a sacrifice fly. Feiner scored when Beaty grounded out.
Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went five innings and allowed six runs on five hits while striking out a pair. He picks up the loss. Perakslis was relieved by Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.). Coughlin went three innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one.
Tyler Iodence went eight innings on the mound for UNLV. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four. Thomas Whitsett pitched the ninth for the Rebels and did not allow a hit.
Maine falls to 0-4 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Stetson to being a four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM.
