Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Decision at #18 Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The University of Maine field hockey squad dropped a tough 1-0 decision against the #18 Albany Great Danes on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Maine to 8-4 on the season and 0-2 in America East play. Albany improves to 11-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Maine was led by Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) who had two shots in the game.
Albany scored the only goal of the contest 29:44 into the first half when Nina Walters found the back of the cage. After a blocked shot off a penalty corner, Walters controlled the rebound and tipped in the shot to put the Great Danes up 1-0.
Maine would battle in the tight contest throughout the second half, getting chances from Newton, Alexa Binnendijk (Den Haag, Holland) and Cassandra Mendonca (Thornhill, Ontario) but just couldn't knot up the score, dropping the decision 1-0.
Albany outshot Maine 7-5 and had the edge in penalty corners at 4-2.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Fleck made three saves in the contest for Maine. Albany split time in the cage with Christine Hoffman and Kristi Troch. Hoffman made two saves while Troch had one save.
Maine returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they travel to take on Brown University.
