Field Hockey Defeats Brown, 3-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine field hockey team picked up a 3-1 victory over Brown University on Sunday afternoon. The Black Bears improve to 9-4 on the season while Brown falls to 2-9. Maine was led by Brittney Cummings (Belfast, Maine) who had two goals, including the game winner.
The Black Bears jumped out to 1-0 advantage 6:26 into the contest Jocelyn Mitchell (Kanata, Ontario) fired a shot from the left side that was deflected to Cummings. Cummings would control the ball and slip a shot by Brown goalkeeper Lauren Kessler.
Just over twenty minutes later, Cummings would again find the back of the cage to put Maine up 2-0. Mallory Anderson (Hampton Falls, N.H.) sent a shot from the right side towards the Brown cage. Cummings tipped the shot on the left post to put Maine up 2-0.
After Leslie Springmeyer picked up an unassisted goal to cut the Maine lead in half, Kelly Newton (Vancouver, British Columbia) would put the Black Bears back up by two goals at the 67:21 mark. Newton carried the ball in and fired a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the back of the cage, giving Maine a 3-1 lead they would not let go.
Maine outshot Brown by a 25-5 margin and also controlled a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Brittany Fleck (Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up the win in the cage for Maine as she made two saves. Kessler gets tagged with the loss as her record dips to 2-7.
Maine retuns to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they meet Davidson in a neutral site game in Providence, R.I.
