Paul Culina, was named Director of Hockey Operations for the University of Maine men’s and women’s ice hockey programs in the fall of 2012. The former head athletic trainer at Maine, Culina will oversee all operations for the hockey programs, in addition to serving as athletic trainer for the men’s ice hockey team.
Culina served as the head athletic trainer at the University of Maine since 2001.
Culina returned to working with the men’s ice hockey team during the 2007 season. Since 2001, he had served as the athletic trainer for Maine football and women’s ice hockey. He joined the Black Bear staff in 1995 and worked with the 1999 NCAA National Championship team.
During his past 17 years at Maine, he has also worked with the men’s soccer, baseball and swimming programs. Culina is also responsible for teaching several courses.
In addition to his athletic training responsibilities this season, Culina will be responsible for travel and other areas regarding operations of the men’s ice hockey program.
A native of Auburn, Maine, Culina received his bachelor of science in physical education with a minor in health education from Norwich University in 1991. He received his masters degree in education from Norwich in 1993. While at Norwich, he served as an assistant athletic trainer from 1991-94. He was an assistant athletic trainer at Bowdoin College from 1994-95.
He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and the Maine Athletic Trainers Association (MATA), along with the Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers’ Society (PHATS), College Athletic Trainers Society and the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dieticians Association. He is also the district representative to the national College and University Athletic Trainers’ Committee. Culina and his wife, Krista, have a daughter Madison and sons Benjamin and Nathan. They reside in Orono.
