Strong Defensive Showing -- The Black Bears are coming off of a strong game by their defense as the group only allowed seven points to Merrimack as the Warriors scored on a pick-six, a blocked punt and a safety.
The group allowed just 290 yards while forcing three takeways, two interceptions and a fumble. The Black Bears also only allowed 79 passing yards.
Forcing Takeaways -- The Black Bears are on the best defenses in the FCS to open up the season in terms of forcing takeaways. Maine has forced six turnovers through three games, which is the 17th-best mark in the FCS and the second-highest mark in the CAA.
Their six takeaways are split right down the middle with three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. The three fumble recoveries is the 14th-most in the FCS and second-most in the CAA while the three interceptions is the 25th-best in the FCS and also second-most in the CAA.
To go along with their takeaways, the Black Bears have been getting to the quarterback over the course of the first three games, having come away with eight sacks, the 14th-best mark in the FCS and third-best in the CAA.
CAA Victory in Week 0
For the first time since the 2024 season, the Black Bears secured their first win of the season in their first game of the season, defeating Towson 21-18. It was the first week 0 game under Head Coach Jordan Stevens and the first time the Black Bears had won their CAA opener under Stevens.
OPPENHEIMER LEADS THE GROUP
After serving as a backup linebacker in his first season with the Black Bears, Sam Oppenheimer has continued to build upon his strong start to the season week after week.
He ranks 11th in nation with 32 tackles and second with 22 solo tackles.Â
His solo tackles lead the CAA while his total tackles are the fourth-most in the FCS.
He also has forced a fumble and had an interception on the season.
O-LINE IS BACK
The Black Bears return four of their starting five offensive linemen from a season ago as All-CAA Lineman and Preseason All-American, Anthony Iliano, leads the crew of Andrew Kocan, Jack Boutaugh and Noah Stanley back for their second-straight season as the frontline of the offense.
Last season, the crew allowed only 18 sacks (1.5 per game) on the season, which featured a stretch of nearly four complete games without allowing a single sack.
Through three games in 2026, the group has allowed only five sacks (1.7 per game).
RUNNING BACK IMPACT
In week 0 the Black Bears scored a pair of touchdowns out of the running back duo of Rashawn Marshall in Nick Laughlin.
Marshall led the Black Bears with 81 rushing yards while Laughlin ranked second on the team in both rushing yards (29) and receiving yards (39).
Through three weeks, Marshall paces all running backs on the team with 38 attempts for 139 yards and two scores while Laughlin leads the team in receiving yards with 117 and receptions with 10.
TAKING AWAY THE BALL
Through three games on the season, the Black Bears defense has six takeaways, which have been made by six different players.
Oppenheimer, Brayden Isaiah and Chris Bacon all have recorded an interception on the season while Jeremiah McGill, Bryce Purnell and Jake Kucera have recovered a fumble.
Oppenheimer, Kye Pressley and Ta'Kai Chisolm have forced the fumbles for the Black Bears.

Since 2013, Maine is 31-22 in games decided by seven points or less.
Maine is 1-0 in 2026 in one possession games, beating Towson 21-18 in week 0.
