Black Bears return home on Oct. 3 to host Sacred Heart
Elon, N.C. – The University of Maine football team (1-4, 1-1) dropped a 43-17 decision at Elon (4-1, 2-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Maine Scoring:
Samuel Tremblay opened the scoring for Maine with a 24-yard field goal following Jeremiah McGill's interception.
The Black Bears found the end zone for the first time early in the third quarter when Rashawn Marshall slashed his way through the defense for a 30-yard rushing score.
Caden Drezek hit Kevin Jackson in the back corner of the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown. The score, coming with just over two minutes left in regulation, matched the first career touchdown for both Drezek and Jackson.
ÂNotes:
- McGill recorded his first interception as a Black Bear, and Maine's sixth of the season, which led to Tremblay's 24-yard field goal with 8:38 left in the first half. McGill finished the day with a team-high eight tackles.
- McGill's interception extended Maine's streak of recording at least one takeaway to five-straight.
- Maine's defense held Elon to 0-for-6 on third down through the first two quarters and 1-for-12 in the game.
- Chris Bacon registered his team-leading third sack.
- Marshall's 30-yard touchdown was the second longest rushing score of his career after a 61-yard score a year ago, also against Elon. He finished the game with a season-high 105-yards on the ground.
- Maine's 8.0 tackles for loss were its most of the season, surpassing its 7.0 effort in the season opener at Towson.
Elon Scoring:
Elon's first drive of the day spanned 10 plays but stalled, ending in a 39-yard field goal from Luke Barnes. A blocked punt was recovered in the end zone by C.J. Hector, resulting in a safety as Elon would lead, 5-0, after one.
The Phoenix tacked on two more touchdowns to end the first half scoring. Elijah Guttman connected with Dylan Magazu for a 57-yard score before Kamerian McDowell-Moore's 55-yard rushing touchdown.
Elon answered Marshall's third quarter touchdown with a six-yard touchdown by McDowell-Moore.
Following a muffed punt recovered by the Phoenix, Barnes' 34-yard field goal extended Elon's lead back to 19 in the closing seconds of the third quarter.
TJ Crews IV found Kenaz McMillian for a 34-yard touchdown strike with 11:19 left in the fourth quarter.
Magazu added his second touchdown of the day with a 1-yard rush late.
