Orono, Maine -- Three former University of Maine baseball program student-athletes are set to compete on Opening Day in Major League Baseball on Thursday, March 26.
Jeremy Pena is set to compete in his fifth major league season as the former World Series and ALCS MVP embarks on his fifth season at the Houston Astros starting shortstop. Across his first four seasons in the show, he has collected 594 hits, 64 of which are home runs, along with driving in 247 runs and swiping 64 bases.
Cody Laweryson, who made his major league debut last September with the Minnesota Twins, was named to the opening day roster on the final day of roster cuts after a stellar spring where he only allowed a single run. In his brief stint with the club last season, he pitched to the tune of a 1.17 ERA across 7.2 innings, striking out seven batters and having a 0.52 WHIP.
Matt Pushard, who will make his major league debut with the Cardinals this spring, is set to embark on his first season at the major league level after being selected by the Cardinals in the Rule 5 Draft. He had a 3.12 ERA across eight games during spring training, striking out nine batters.
