PREVIEW: Men's hockey set to host Quinnipiac in home opener

Maine and Quinnipiac will meet at 7 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10 at Alfond Arena.
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will open up the 2026-27 home slate this weekend with a pair of games against the sixth-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats.

Maine and Quinnipiac will meet at 7 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10 at Alfond Arena. Both games will stream live on ESPN+ with an international stream available on HockeyEast.TV. The games can also be listened to via 92.9 FM in eastern Maine, 100.5 FM in southern Maine, 1310 AM or online at GoBlackBears.com/MIHRadio. WHAT'S ON TAP
• The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will host Quinnipiac in the 2026-27 home opener on Friday night ... the teams will close out the weekend with another tilt on Saturday.
• Maine opened up the season at Holy Cross, going 1-0-1 with a 4-1 win and a 3-2 overtime loss.
• Quinnipiac is coming off of a pair of big wins on its opening weekend, skating to a 10-2 win over New Hampshire and a 6-3 win over Merrimack.
• Maine is coming off of a 2025-26 season in which it went 18-14-3 overall while Quinnipiac went 27-10-3.
A WIN ON FRIDAY WOULD. . .
• Bump the Black Bears to 31-15-3 all-time in the home opener, including a mark of 5-1-0 under head coach Ben Barr.
• Give Maine a fifth consecutive win in the home opener.
• Move Maine to 13-10-2 in the all-time series with Quinnipiac.

• The Bobcats had an explosive first weekend, combing for 16 goals across two games … there were 11 different players with a goal and 17 total players had at least one point.
• Quinnipiac returns its top five scorers from a season ago in Ethan Wyttenbach, Antonin Verreault, Markus Vidicek, Chris Pelosi and Mason Marcellus.
• Wyttenbach was the 2026 National Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-American while being named a Hobey Baker Award Top-10 Finalist … the now sophomore had 59 points on 25 goals and 34 assists.
• The Bobcats were picked to finish first in the ECAC Preseason Coaches Poll, earning 10 of a possible 12 first-place votes.
SERIES HISTORY vs QUINNIPIAC
• Maine holds a 12-10-2 edge in the all-time series with Quinnipiac, including a record of 8-5-1 in games at Alfond Arena.
• In 2025-26, the teams met twice in Connecticut ... the teams skated to a 4-4 tie on Friday before Quinnipiac picked up a 4-0 win on Saturday.
• The squads last met at Alfond Arena in October 2024, with Maine earning a 2-1 win and a 6-5 overtime victory ... both teams landed in the Allentown Regional for the 2025 NCAA Tournament but didn't play.
• The first ever meeting in the series came on Dec. 12, 1999, with the Black Bears earning a 7-4 win at the Alfond.
• Nine current Black Bears have at least one career point against the Bobcats with Owen Fowler's two goals leading the way ... Max Scott has two career assists against Quinnipiac.

• The 2026-27 season marks the 50th year of Alfond Arena (and the 50th season of varsity play for Maine men's ice hockey).
• Throughout the season, Maine Athletics will be celebrating the golden anniversary of one of the most storied homes in college hockey.
• Since its dedication on Feb. 5, 1977, Alfond Arena has served as the heartbeat of Black Bear hockey and the surrounding community ... home to the men's and women's ice hockey programs, it has seen over 700 wins.
• The celebration will culminate with an anniversary weekend on Feb. 4-5, 2027 as the women's hockey team will host UConn on Feb. 4 before the men's team welcomes Boston University on Feb. 5.
• As the men's program plays through the program's 50th season of varsity play, Maine men's hockey social channels will highlight teams, players and moments that have shaped the program's history.
BRAND NEW FACES
• The 2026-27 roster features 15 new student-athletes.
• There are seven forwards, six defenseman and two goaltenders among the newcomers, including eight transferring in with previous collegiate experience.
• Two of the transfers come in with Hockey East experience while there is one each from the NCHC, Big Ten, AHA, CCHA and an Independent.
• There are three draft picks coming in with Dru Krebs (WSH), Ludvig Lafton (UTA) and Chris Romaine (COL).
