All proceeds raised will go towards supporting the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Lafayette Family Cancer Institute
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine and the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center Lafayette Family Cancer Institute are proud to announce details of its 'Cancer Awareness Night' to be held on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Alfond Arena when the men's ice hockey team takes on Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.
As a special remembrance of Deena Renwick, mother of former Black Bear Nolan Renwick, who passed away on July 19, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer, the Black Bears will wear special "#24" jerseys, Nolan's number, during their pregame skate. Those jerseys will be signed by the player who wore them and then put up for auction, with all proceeds raised going to support the Lafayette Champion the Cure Challenge. Fans interested in placing a bid for the auction can do so here. The auction will close at 11 p.m. on Oct. 10. Winning bidders may have their jersey shipped or may pick them up at the Bear Necessities Fan Shop beginning on Monday, Oct. 12 during regular operating hours.
Furthermore, additional "#24" jerseys will be available for sale at the Bear Necessities Fan Shop with all proceeds of the #24 jerseys sold on Oct. 10 going to support the Lafayette Family Cancer Institute.
A special thank you to New Balance for donating the jerseys and W.S. Emerson for donating the print on each sweater.
Throughout the evening, the Black Bears will be highlighting the Lafayette Champion the Cure Campaign and educating fans on ways to support the fight against cancer and build awareness towards cancer research and cancer care both locally and regionally. A ceremonial puck drop featuring a local cancer survivor with ties to the Maine men's and women's hockey programs will take place along with a special on-ice recognition highlighting Ava Collins, Senior VP of Northern Light Health and President of Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, Jill Smith, cancer survivor, Danny & Carly Lafayette, and Deena Renwick's husband Brent and daughter Jenna.
Additionally, fans who wish to donate to the Champion the Cure Challenge may do so at this link.
