Maine battles to tie at Providence, wins shootout

Taylor Makar scored two goals while Albin Boija made 29 saves in the 3-3 tie.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The #5 University of Maine men's ice hockey team battled to a 3-3 tie at #7 Providence College on Friday night at Schneider Arena.

After the Friars took a lead 2:33 into the contest, the Black Bears scored exactly 17 minutes later for a 1-1 game at the first intermission. Providence was then able to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. Taylor Makar scored a short-handed goal midway through the third stanza – only to see Providence go back up yet again – and then Makar potted an extra attacker goal with two minutes to play to force overtime.

Neither team found the back of the net in overtime and then Albin Boija stopped all four Friars he faced in the shootout while Sully Scholle converted his chance for the extra league point.
