CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts – The University of Maine women's track and field program opened their season in Cambridge, competing in the Harvard Classic on Saturday December 6.
The afternoon started with the 5000m which saw Katelyn Macnamara finish in 5th place overall with a time of 17:51.30. Natalie Johnson, in her first indoor collegiate event took home 6th place with a time of 18:39.97.
Saphryn Humason took home a top 10 finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.15m (16' 10.75"). Athena Cusson was the only other Maine competitor in this event. Cusson finished 16th with a distance of 4.86m (15' 11.5").
Cheyenne Figueroa continues to dominate the competition as the reigning America East Weight Throw champion. Figueroa started her road to the top with a 1st place finish with a distance of 17.42m (57' 2"). Sabine Sites finished in the top 10 with a 10th place finish, with a distance of 12.35m (40' 6.25"). Ava Zollars rounded out the Maine trio with an 11th place finish with a distance of 12.05 (39' 6.5").
The first year duo of Lauren Hamilton and Grace Lambert took home the top two spots in the 3000m event. Hamilton finished with the top time of 10:27.38 and Lambert finished with a time of 11:09.95.
Lydia White was the only Black Bear to compete in the Pole Vault event. White finished 7th overall with a height of 3.15m (10' 4").
Emma Tessier took home a 3rd place finish in the Mile event with a time of 5:31.05. Amy Rein rounded out the top 5 finishers with a 5th place finish, with a time of 5:32.16. Avery O'Neill rounded out the trio of Black Bears in this event with a time of 5:37.32.
Cassidy Novicka took home a 2nd place finish in the 400m event with a time of 1:00.94. Maddie Cyr finished right after Novicka with a time of 1:01.04. A tenth of a second split the two teammates from 2nd and 3rd place.
Saphyrn Humason was back in action, this time in the Triple Jump. Humason finished 7th overall with a distance of 11.20m (36' 9").
Julia Bassi saw her first action of the afternoon in the Shot Put. Finishing with a distance of 11.56m (37' 11.25"), that would be good for an 11th place finish in the event. Athena Cusson finished 19th overall with a distance of 8.66m (28' 5").
Ameila Vandongen wrapped up her first indoor collegiate event with a 3rd place finish. Vandongen finished with a time of 2:20.86. Bri Harriman finished in 6th place with a time of 2:28.56.
Catherine Primavera took home a top 5 finish in the 200m with a time of 26.48, finishing in 4th place. Bayleigh Shanahan took home a 6th place finish, finishing just two tenths of a second behind Primavera with a time of 26.68. Maddie Chaput rounded out the Maine field of competitors in 9th place with a time of 26.97.
Maine only had one relay team in the 4x400. The group of Maddie Chaput, Bri Harriman, Athena Cusson, and Callie Tennett finished 5th overall with a time of 4:20.70.
The Black Bears return to action on December 12th as they host the Eagles of Husson University at the New Balance Indoor Track.
