Durham, NH - The Maine women's ice hockey team clawed their way back from a two goal deficit to earn a 2-2 tie on Saturday against the University of New Hampshire. After a scoreless overtime period, the Wildcats earned the extra point in the shootout.
With three minutes and 17 seconds left in the game, the Black Bears won a coaches challenge for a 5-minute powerplay opportunity where they were able to score two goals to tie the game. Junior forward
Mikayla Boarder scored first at the 3:17 minute mark, with
Sade Sandilands and
Mackenzie Podewell earning an assist. 50 second later,
Stephanie Jacob notched the game-tying goal.
Paige Fong earned an assist. Between the two Maine goals, the Black Bears scored an additional goal that eventually got overturned and called off.
The 2-2 tie was backstopped by netminder
Kiia Lahtinen who made 21 saves on 23 shots faced.
Game Notes:
Maine outshot the Wildcats 41 to 23.
Raegan Wurm led Maine with eight shots on goal, for a personal best.
Maine was 1/5 on the powerplay and 3/4 on the penalty kill.
Brenna Curl was Maine's lone scorer in the shootout.
Maine earns one conference point for the shootout loss, for a weekend split with UNH of three points apiece.
