Box Score 2 Port Charlotte, FL - The University of Maine baseball team was swept on opening day by Pittsburgh in a doubleheader.
Game One - First Pitch Noon: 10-7 Pittsburgh
First Inning: Pittsburgh scored a pair of runs to open the contest.
Second Inning: Maine scored their first run of the season as Jeph Hadson-Taylor scored Jake Marquez (BB) on a fielder's choice play to the pitcher.
Third Inning: Maine grabbed their first lead of the afternoon as the reigning America East Player of the Year, Jeremiah Jenkins launched his first homerun of the season to left field. The two-run shot scored Myles Sargent (1B) on the play.
Pittsburgh responded with a five-run inning in the bottom of the frame.
Fifth Inning: Pittsburgh scored an unearned run to make it 8-3.
Sixth Inning: Ryan Scott began the frame on the mound for Maine. Gambardella went 5 innings in his first start of the season, allowing 8 runs (7 earned) on 8 hits, 4 walks and striking out 4 batters.
Seventh Inning: Dean O'Neill registered his first base hit of the season and first RBI of the season as he hit a rocket to third base that got down the line to score Jeph Hadson Taylor (BB).
Pittsburgh responded in the bottom of the frame with a solo homerun and a RBI single to make it 10-4.
Eight Inning: Zach Martin made his presence felt early in his Black Bear debut as he picked up his third hit of the afternoon in the eight inning, this one being a two-run double to right field, scoring Nick White (BB) and Jake Marquez (2B).
Two batters later, Colin Plante recorded the Black Bears third double of the frame, which allowed Martin (2B) to score and made it a three-run game at 10-7.
Marshall Smaracko began the eighth inning on the mound for the Black Bears. Scott went 2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, no walks and striking out 1.
Smaracko allowed no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk and 1 strikeout across his inning of work.
Pittsburgh came away with the victory, 10-7.
Fernandez (1-0) picked up the win while Gambardella (0-1) took the loss. Fox (1) picked up the save.

Game Two - First Pitch 3:50 P.M.: 7-4 Pittsburgh
Second Inning: Maine grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a sac-fly to center field by Jeph Hadson-Taylor, who scored Jake Marquez (BB/SB).
Fourth Inning: Pittsburgh tied the contest up on a wild pitch.
Sixth Inning: Luc Lavigueur began the sixth inning on the mound for the Black Bears. Jason Kreiger was solid in his collegiate debut as he allowed just 1 run on 3 hits, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Pittsburgh took the lead at 2-1 following a sac-fly.
Seventh Inning: Myles Sargent broke through for Maine to record their first hit of the contest as he recorded an RBI double to right-center, scoring Logan Burrill (BB). Sargent later came into score on a wild pitch as Maine grabbed the lead at 3-2.
Pittsburgh tied the contest up on a solo home run in the bottom of the frame and took the lead later in the frame on a double.
Eighth Inning: Jake Marquez hit his first home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning, a solo shot to left field. His homerun tied the contest up at 4-4.
Pittsburgh grabbed the lead back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single to center field.
Owen Wheeler was called on in the bottom of the frame with one runner on. Lavigueur concluded his season debut by throwing 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits, no walks and striking out 2.
Pittsburgh added one more run in the frame to take a 7-4 lead.
Wheeler picked up his first collegiate strikeout in the frame.
Pittsburgh came away with the victory, 7-4.
Coleman (1-0) got the win for Pittsburgh while Lavigueur (0-1) took the loss for Maine. Candelario (1) picked up the save.
Game three of the weekend series is scheduled for Noon on Saturday, Feb. 17.
