Black Bears suffer 56-52 setback to Penn

Bornemann leads all scorers with game-high 19 points

ORONO, Maine -- Caroline Bornemann posted her seventh career double-double with a game-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds in Maine's 56-52 loss to Penn on Sunday afternoon.

Paula Gallego's bucket with 2:41 left in regulation put the Black Bears on top by one but Penn would end the game on a 10-5 run to seal the victory.

Olivia Rockwood hit four triples in the game for 12 points while Gallego added 12 points on 5-of-9 from the field to go along with a career-high matching six assists.

Maine finished 21-of-53 (39.6) from the floor with eight triples in a game which featured nine lead change and a tie.

The Black Bears started hot, opening with a 7-0 run as Rockwood's first triple of the day gave the hosts a seven point edge just 2:15 into the contest.

Penn cut the lead to a pair before buckets from Asta Blauenfeldt and Sarah Talon ran Maine's lead back out to six.

An 11-0 run by the Quakers gave the visitors their first lead of the day, 20-15, with 5:26 to play in the half.

Penn entered the break leading 27-20.

The Black Bears would outscore Penn 16-10 in the third, hitting four triples in the 10-minute stretch.

Penn took its largest lead of the day, 37-28, with 2:37 left in the third.

Maine would end the third on a strong run, piecing together an 8-0 run to draw within a point. Rockwood opened the sprint with another triple before Gallego's driving bucket, off a Penn turnover, cut the deficit to four. Bornemann's three sent Maine into the fourth quarter trailing by one, 37-36.

The run stretched to 10-0 when Bornemann worked inside for a pair to put Maine back on top, 38-37, with 8:54 to play.

The teams would trade the lead seven more times over the next six minutes of action when Penn's Mataya Gayle gave the Quakers a 48-47 lead iit would not relinquish.

Maine was unable to trim the lead down any further, falling to the Quakers by a final of 56-52.

The Black Bears return to action when they travel to take on Rhode Island on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6:35 p.m.
