CHATTANOOGA, TN -- The University of Maine softball team defeated Western Illinois University, 8-1, in game number one, while being defeated by Marshall, 16-0, in game number two on day one in Tennessee.
Game One - Maine: 8 Western Illinois: 1
The first three innings of the weekend 'round-robin' were played to a scoreless tie.
Anna Margetis scored the first run of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning. The Black Bears pushed across three more runs in their half of the fifth. Margetis and
Izzy Nieblas both recorded run scoring doubles.

Western Illinois scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Maine posted four runs in the seventh inning. Nieblas (two),
Gabby Papushka, and
Nora Campo all recorded an RBI in the rally. The 8-1 advantage stood as the Black Bears won their second game of the 2023 season.
