LAST TIME OUT:
Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team outscored Harvard 47-32 to help it earn a 79-61 victory over the Crimson on Wednesday evening at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Black Bears followed up its best shooting performance of the season (51.9) in a win at Fordham with another impressive showing in which it finished 29-of-57 (50.9) from the floor with 10 triples and a 11-of-15 mark from the free throw stripe.
Maine, which tallied its highest point scoring total of the season, was led by
Anne Simon who scored 13 of her game-high 17 points in the second half to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Caroline Bornemann added a season-high 16 points while
Jaycie Christopher came off the bench to chip in 13 points on 3-of-4 shooting from downtown. Despite not registering 10 rebounds,
Adrianna Smith posted her nation-leading seventh double-double with 12 points and a career-high 10 assists. For Smith, it marked her fifth double-double in as many games.
The Black Bears stayed strong on the boards, winning the rebounding battle (34-27) for seventh time this season with 13 offensive boards in the win. Maine's defense forced 21 turnovers on 11 steals.
A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:
The Black Bears feature the top net ranking (132) in the America East and have faced the 116th toughest schedule, tops in America East, this season. Maine, which has won six in a row in Orono dating back to last season, enter action ranked fourth in the America East in scoring (61.4) and fifth in scoring defense (60.7). The Black Bears, which has outrebounded its opponent in seven of its first 10 outings, lead the America East at 38.4 rebounds per game with a league-high +6.0 rebounding margin.
Anne Simon, who has posted double-digit scoring in each of her last four outings, has collected three America East Player of the Week honors this season and currently leads the conference in scoring at 18.9 points per game. Simon's 189 points this season are the 33rd most scored in the nation this season. Simon ranks second in the conference in steals (2.4) and third in rebounding (7.4).
Adrianna Smith ranks fourth in the country and tops in the America East with seven double-doubles this season including a double-double in each of her last five outings including a 10 assist performance last time out. Smith leads the league at 11.0 rebounds per game, 13th in the nation, and checks ninth among league leaders in scoring at 12.6 points per game with double-double scoring efforts in each of her last seven outings and eight of 10.
A LOOK AT JAMES MADISON:
The Dukes, winners of their last two over Wake Forest and William & Mary, are 5-1 at home this season and 1-1 on the road. JMU ranks seventh in the Sun Belt in scoring (71.3), fifth in rebounding (59.3), and have bee dominant on the boards averaging 48.9 rebounds per game which is good for fourth in the nation and second in the Sun Belt to go along with a Sun Belt leading +15.4 rebounding margin. Jamia Hazell leads a balanced scoring output for the Dukes at 11.1 points per game followed closely by Kseniia Kozlova's 11.0 points. Peyton McDaniel is adding 10.9 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds.
SERIES WITH JAMES MADISON:
Maine and JMU are deadlocked at 6-6 in the head-to-head series with the Black Bears taking the most recent meeting, 60-58, a year ago in the season opener at James Madison. In that Maine win,Â
Caroline Bornemann's bucket with 1.4 remaining in regulation broke the 58-58 tie to give Maine the win.
Anne Simon led the way with 17 of her 21 points coming in the second half while
Olivia Rockwood added 17 points with five triples. Maine, 2-1 at home against JMU, last defeated the Dukes in Orono in 1997. Maine won the first-ever meeting in the series, 71-54, on Dec. 29, 1991.
