Codi Fitzgerald hired as Director of Sports Performance

Orono, Maine – University of Maine Deputy Athletic Director Jason Grunkemeyer has announced the hiring of Codi Fitzgerald as Director of Sports Performance.

"We are thrilled to have Codi in this role as Director of Sport Performance," Grunkemeyer says. "In our national search for the position, our committee interviewed several very qualified candidates with terrific backgrounds but felt that Codi ultimately was the best fit. He has both great institutional knowledge of our current structure as well valuable experience working as an assistant at Merrimack and head strength coach at Saint Anselm. Codi is ready for this next step in his career and we are excited on the impact he will have in this critical role of the development of our student athletes."

Fitzgerald begins his role as Director of Sports Performance after serving as a sports performance coach at Maine, the head strength and conditioning coach at Saint Anselm, and a graduate fellowship at Merrimack College.

"It is a huge privilege to take on the role of Director of Sports Performance here at the University of Maine," Fitzgerald says. "We have a great group of coaches and leaders here that I am excited to continue to work with in the new role. We are in a growth period for athletics and the University, and I believe there are a lot of great things coming for our student-athletes and campus community as a whole."

Beginning in July of 2021, Fitzgerald has served as sports performance coach at Maine where he worked with the men's and women's ice hockey programs.

Prior to his time at Maine, Fitzgerald served from Aug. 2019 through June 2021 in the sports performance department at Saint Anselm and was promoted to head strength and conditioning coach with the Hawks in January of 2021. While in that role, Fitzgerald had direct oversight of the entire strength and conditioning program and managed the budget and internship curriculum. Fitzgerald worked with a variety of sports during his stint at Saint Anselm including men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, field hockey, softball, and football.

Fitzgerald earned his master of science in exercise and sport sciences in 2019 from Merrimack after achieving his bachelor of science in kinesiology from the University of Maine in 2018.
