Orono, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team fell to Boston University in a tight game that came down to the wire by a score of 4-3.
The Black Bears started out solid killing off a penalty in the first few minutes of the game when
Kennedy Little was called for slashing just over three minutes in. The Black Bears held the Terriers off as they did not allow them to take any shots on the power play opportunity. At the 4:05 minute mark left in the first period, Boston University tipped one past Maine's goaltender
Julia Bachetti. Bachetti made 13 saves in the first period.
Ann-Frederique Guay was called for a penalty just four seconds left in the first period.
The Black Bears started the second period successfully killing off Guay's penalty which built up the team's momentum. With 7:19 left in the period,
Alyssa Wruble won a race to a loose puck and fired a shot that tipped in for Maine's first goal. The Terriers responded with two goals just one minute apart to take the lead back. The Black Bears reacted as
Ida Kuoppala found the back of the net on a breakaway pass from
Ann-Frederique Guay with six minutes left in the period.
Julia Bachetti made 15 saves for Maine in the second period, as it ended with Boston University leading 3 to 2.
The Black Bears closed the gap as
Ida Kuoppala scored again to tie the game up. Kuoppala's power play goal was assisted by
Lily Fetch and
Sophia Johnson. As the time ticked down, both teams saw many chances on odd-rush opportunities. With 8:27 left in the game, Maine was called for a penalty that allowed Boston University to score a game-winning power play goal. The Terriers defeated the Black Bears by a score of 4-3.
Julia Bachetti made a career-high of 35 saves for the Maine Black Bears.
The Black Bears head to Boston College next weekend for a pair of conference games.
