Football falls at home to UAlbany

Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine football team jumped out to a 7-0 lead before falling to UAlbany, 37-21, at Alfond Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Derek Robertson finished the game 29-of-43 for 220 yards with three touchdowns. It marked the fourth time in his last five outings in which he registered three or more touchdown passes. Michael Monios posted a career day with a career-highs in receptions (10) and receiving yards (96) to go along with his first touchdown reception of the season. Jamie Lamson registered a touchdown reception for the third-straight game as he finished with six catches for 55-yards.

John Costanza led Maine's defensive effort with a career-high seven tackles, including a half tackle for loss, while Tyshawn Stewart added six stops in the contest.

The Black Bears opened the scoring when it completed an eight play, 69-yard drive with an eight yard touchdowns pass from Robertson to Lamson with 10:39 left in the first quarter.

The Great Danes responded with 17 unanswered points.

UAlbany tied the game on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Reese Poffenbarger to Brevin Easton before taking the lead on a 22-yard field goal from John Opalko with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

On the Black Bears' next possession, UAlbany's Brian Abraham was able to strip the Maine ball carrier. Abraham would scoop the forced fumble up at the UAlbany 32 and scamper into the end zone for a touchdown.

Maine settled in and pieced together a lengthy, 14 play, 75-yard drive for a touchdown. Robertson moved the ball into UAlbany territory on back-to-back completions to Monios. Another completion to Monios set Maine up at the UAlbany four yard line before the duo hooked up once again for a touchdown reception.

UAlbany answered before the end of the half as Poffenbarger hit Easton for another touchdown, this one going for a 53-yards.

The Great Danes would take a 24-14 edge into the break.

The late first half touchdown jump started a 20-0 spring by the Great Danes as they would start the second half scoring on an 11-yard rushing score by Faysal Aden. The lead would grow to 30-14 on the play after the point after try failed.

Aden added another rushing score, this one from 12-yards out, to expand the lead to 37-14 with 6:07 remaining.

Maine was able to cut into the score when Robertson found Tristen Kenan for a 11-yard touchdown reception but the Black Bears were unable to close the gap further, falling to the Great Danes by a final of 37-21.

The Black Bears continue CAA play when they host Hampton on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
