Carroll's double-double leads Maine to fifth-straight win

Black Bears sweep weekend series at Binghamton with 48-46 victory

Vestal, N.Y. -- The Black Bears, who trailed by eight in the fourth quarter, rallied to earn their fifth-straight win with a 48-46 victory at Binghamton on Sunday afternoon. The win improved the Black Bears to 11-10 overall and 8-3 in America East play.

Maine, which outscored Binghamton 20-12 in the final quarter, was led by Maeve Carroll who tallied her second double-double in as many games with 12 points and 14 rebounds to go along with seven assists. Anne Simon added her 13th-straight double-digit scoring performance with 11 points while Caroline Bornemann also finished with 11 to go along with seven rebounds and a career-best five steals. Alba Orois rounded out Maine's four double-figure scorers with 10 points.

The Black Bears held Binghamton scoreless over the game's opening 4:07 as the visitors were able to race out to a 7-0 advantage.

With Maine leading by three late in the second, Binghamton was able to grab its first lead of the afternoon as it would close out the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 26-21 advantage into the half.

Back-to-back unanswered buckets early in the third from Binghamton gave the host a six-point cushion, 31-25. The Bearcats would take their six point lead into the fourth and final quarter.

Binghamton's lead would grow to eight, its largest of the day, with 9:14 to play in the fourth.

The Black Bears began their comeback as back-to-back buckets from Carroll jump started a 10-0 run for Maine. A triple from Orois brought Maine to within one before Bornemann put Maine up by a pair on her first three of the afternoon with 2:17 to play in regulation.

Two ties and two lead changes would take place over the next minute until another three from Orois would put Maine on top for good. The sophomore's triple with 1:34 on the clock gave Maine a 45-44 edge. Bornemann's layup off a turnover would extend the lead out to three as Maine would hold on, completing the sweep and improving to 8-3 in league play with a 48-46 victory.

Maine returns home on Wednesday to host UAlbany at 7 p.m. at The Pit inside Memorial Gymnasium. The game will mark Maine's annual Pink Game as it raises awareness for cancer and funds to support cancer research.
