Baton Rouge, La. --
Scout Knotts blasted his first home run of the season as the Black Bears fell in their season opener at No. 3 LSU, 13-1.
Brett Erwin, making his first career start with the Black Bears, went five innings while giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits to go along with seven strikeouts.
Knotts,
Jordan Schulefand,
Ryan Turenne, and
Jake Marquez each recorded a hit each for the Black Bears.
After Erwin tossed three shutout innings to start the game, LSU was able to break through with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Tigers tacked on three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh, extending the lead to 8-0.
A five-run eighth gave the Tigers a 13-0 lead heading to the ninth.
The Black Bears broke through in the top of the ninth as Knotts took a 3-1 pitch over the left center field wall for Maine's first run of the year.
However, the single run would be all Maine could garner as the Black Bears dropped the season opener, 13-1.
Maine and LSU meet for game two of the series on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
