Orono, Maine -- Former University of Maine shortstop Jeremy Peña has been named the America League Championship Series Most Valuable Player after assisting the Houston Astros to a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees.
Peña finished his ALCS run 6-for-17 with two home runs and two doubles. Peña batted .353 in the series with a .824 slugging percentage and a 1.176 on-base plus slugging percentage while driving in four runs and scoring three. His three-run homer in game four, measured at 408 feet, tied the game. Later on, Peña scored the game-winning run on an RBI single by Alex Bregman.
Peña was drafted by the Houston Astros in the third round of the 2018 amateur draft. While at UMaine, Peña hit .305 for the Black Bears over three seasons with 196 hits, 75 RBI, 12 home runs, 32 doubles, 10 triples, and 30 stolen bases.
Peña and the Astros will meet the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 World Series.
