PREVIEW: Men's Basketball Competes in Buffalo Wild Wings Border Battle at UNH

ORONO, ME -- The University of Maine men's basketball team is heading to New Hampshire for the border battle, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

Wednesday's game will be broadcast live on the ESPN 3. The game can also be heard worldwide on the Black Bears Sports Network and locally in Maine on 92.9 FM.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:

The Black Bears hed to New Hampshire following a loss at Stony Brook, 80-72. 

The Black Bears have started conference play 0-2, but the player to watch out for for the Black Bears is Sam Ihekwoaba. Coming off of his second straight America East Rookie of the Week award, Ihekwoaba is averaging 20 PPG and 8 Reb in his first two conference games. He dropped a career high 22 at Stony Brook back on Saturday, Jan. 8.

Ja'Shonte Wright-McLeish and Maks Klanjscek are another pair of Black Bears coming off of career highs in scoring at Stony Brook. Wright-McLeish dropped 15, while Klanjscek supplied 13 in the losing effort.

A LOOK AT NEW HAMPSHIRE

The Wildcats are coming off of a 2-point victory at UAlbany, 64-62. Nick Guadarrama put on a dominate performance for the Wildcats, dropping 32 on 11-16 shooting. Nick Johnson chipped in with 14 points of his own.

Jayden Martinez has been the top scorer for the Wildcats, averaging 15.3 PPG, while also ranking second with 7.0 reb per game. Guadarrama ranks second on the squad with 12.9 PPG, Blondeau Tchoukuiegno is third with 10.7 PPG. 

The Wildcats are among the best in the country in taking care of the ball and capitalizing on the chances from behind the ark. Coming in ranking second in fewest turnonvers per game (8.5), New Hampshire also ranks 16th in 3PT field goal percentage (38.8%).

HISTORY AGAINST NEW HAMPSHIRE

The Black Bears face their border battle rival for the 198th time on Wednesday night, with Maine holding a big edge in the all-time matchup, 121-76. The last matchup on Jan. 3, 2021, resulted in a Wildcat victory, a narrow 62-58 win. Maine was lead offesnively by Ja'Shonte Wright-Mcleish (12pts), Steph Igno (10pts, 17reb) and LeChaun DuHart (7pts, 2a). The wildcats were led by Jayden Martinez (23pts, 7reb) and Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (7pts, 3reb, 4a).
