Orono, Maine – University of Maine head football coach
Nick Charlton has announced that former Black Bear and eight-year National Football League veteran Matthew Mulligan will join the Maine coaching staff. Mulligan will serve in a volunteer role as an assistant sports performance coach and coaching assistant.
Â
"We are thrilled to add Coach Mulligan to our sports performance and football staff this summer," says Charlton. "Matt is a Maine Sports Hall of Famer and someone whose accomplishments speak for themselves. After an acclaimed career at the University of Maine, he went out to play for nearly a decade in the NFL. After his playing career, he quickly gained experience in strength and conditioning along with coaching at both the professional and collegiate level, while already developing a strong relationship with our players here in Orono. Matt will be an outstanding addition to our staff."
Â
Mulligan spent two years as a tight end with the Black Bears. Following his time in Orono, Mulligan signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2008 and would go on to be a member of 10 NFL franchises over his eight-year career, serving stints with the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, and Detroit Lions.
Â
"Coming back to the University of Maine is a tremendous opportunity," says Mulligan. "I am grateful to Coach Charlton and Director of Athletics
Ken Ralph for making this happen. There are many great things to come. Go Black Bears!"
Â
Mulligan, who spent his time in the NFL as a tight end blocking specialist, caught 18 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns throughout his professional career. Mulligan saw action in 89 games in the NFL while appearing in seven playoff contests with the Jets, Patriots, and Lions. Following his NFL career, Mulligan transitioned to a strength and conditioning role with the Washington Football Team.
