Black Bears Clinch Trip to America East Playoffs

Bears win two, Hartford defeats Lowell twice, Maine clinches playoff spot

ORONO - The University of Maine baseball program picked up two critical wins at Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon, defeating UAlbany twice to help clinch a berth in the America East playoffs.

Game one tested the cardiac capacity of Black Bear fans everywhere, as Maine needed two wins and a pair of Hartford wins over UMass-Lowell to clinch a spot in the four-team America East playoffs.

Maine built out a 3-0 lead behind a Sean Lawlor solo shot in the second and a pair of runs in the fifth, however the Danes plated five runs in the sixth inning to put the game in their control.

Peter Kemble entered in the seventh and provided a clutch one-two-three inning to get the momentum flowing in Maine's direction.

Colby Emmertz notched a one-out single to get Maine on the basepaths, then a fielder's choice and a Jake Rainess single set Maine up with two aboard and two outs.

Quinn McDaniel laced a double to right-center to drive in Jake Marquez, bringing Connor Goodman to the plate with two outs and a 5-4 UAlbany lead.

Goodman got down to his last strike, before saving the Maine season with a walkoff single that score McDaniel and Rainess;

Game two went to freshman Tyler Nielsen on the mound, and Nielsen stepped up in a major way. Setting new career-highs with six innings and five strikeouts with no runs allowed and just three hits scattered, Nielsen departed in line for the win. Matt Pushard took over afterwards, chucking three innings to earn his second save of the season.

As he's done all season, Sean Lawlor led Maine's offense with two RBI on a 2-4 day at the dish while Scout Knotts delivered an RBI and the Bears picked up an unearned run in the seventh, providing just enough for the 4-2 win.

After game two concluded, all eyes turned to Lowell, as the Hartford Hawks won game one and needed to defeat UMass-Lowell again in order for Maine to sneak into the playoffs. The Hawks held on, sending Maine to the America East playoffs for the 11th straight season.

Maine will take on Stony Brook on Thursday in the first round of the tournament on Long Island.
