ALBANY, N.Y. - The Maine Black Bears baseball team cruised to back-to-back America East victories, with both
Nicholas Sinacola and
Noah Lewis dominating on the mound to earn the wins.
Game one saw the Bears come out with a bit of an edge after a lackluster performance a weekend ago at UMass-Lowell. Sean Lawlor led the way with a grand slam in the fourth inning as part of his 3-4 game at the plate. Maine would score 13 unanswered by the time the sixth inning rolled around, as eight different Black Bears tallied an RBI in the 14-2 victory.
Nicholas Sinacola remained dominant, striking out 12 batters, walking none, and allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Sinacola nears the single-season strikeout record of 108, as he now sits at 96 strikeouts so far. He maintains his record-setting K/9 pace, raising it back up to 17.20, with the all-time record for Division I College Baseball being 16.80.
Habitual slow starters in game twos this year, the Black Bears bucked that trend in game two with a first-inning run to take the lead instantly. Crooked numbers in the third and fourth inning provided even more breathing room, and Maine's bullpen hung on for the 7-6 victory.
Noah Lewis matched Sinacola's winning effort on the hill, going six innings and allowing just one earned run to pick up his third victory in his freshman campaign.
The top three spots in the lineup did a fine job on the day, combining for nine hits and seven runs between Jeff Mejia, Connor Goodman, and Scout Knotts. Joe Bramanti blasted his third home run of the season in game one, and Colby Emmertz went 2-3 with two runs scored in game two.
Maine recorded their eighth game this season with a double-digit run total, the most for a Maine team since the 2012 team recorded nine such games in their 56-game season.
The Black Bears and Danes will meet again for two more tomorrow, with game one now set for a 10:00am start.
