Rainess' Heroics Lift Maine to Game Two and Series Win

Maine starts the season 3-1, best start since '08

North Andover, Mass. - The University of Maine baseball team pulled off the series win at Merrimack this weekend, splitting the Sunday doubleheader to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The high-point of the day came via one of the more dramatic home runs in recent Maine Baseball history, and it was provided by Jake Rainess in the ninth inning of game two.

GAME ONE

Maine started off a bit rocky on Sunday afternoon, as Stetson-transfer Michael Bacica got the start on the mound for the first time as a Black Bear. Despite a rocky first inning that saw a walk, two hit batters, and a throwing error and put Maine down two early, Bacica settled in and provided four solid innings with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts.

The offense just wasn't ever there for Maine in game one, as Ryan Turenne, Quinn McDaniel, and Joe Bramanti all recorded two hits for all six of the total Black Bear hits in the game. Three runs in the sixth resulted in the 5-0 final score.

GAME TWO

Maine flipped the script in game two, as Connor Goodman scored on a balk and sparked a four run inning highlighted by a Bramanti RBI single. A double and a single by Merrimack in the bottom half of the inning made it 4-1, but the Bears came back with two runs in the second via a Scout Knotts sac-fly and McDaniel scoring on a wild pitch.

Things unraveled for Maine in the bottom of the fifth, as three errors and two hits turned into four Merrimack runs. Runs in the seventh and eight, along with Maine not recording a hit from the fifth to eighth, sent the game into the ninth with Maine trailing 9-6.

Colin Plante led off the inning with a single, and came around to score two batters later thanks to a Connor Goodman single. After an infield popup left Maine with just two outs to play with down two runs, Jake Rainess stepped to the plate.

Rainess took the first pitch over the left-field fence, driving in Goodman and McDaniel and giving Maine a 10-9 lead.

Maine wasn't done, as Jeff Mejia drove in two runs and Connor Goodman came back around and drove in another run with his second RBI single of the inning. Maine ended up with seven hits and eight runs in the ninth inning.

Dillon Stimpson came on to record the save by striking out the side, and Maine took the 14-9 victory.

With the win, Maine improves to 3-1 on the young season, their best start since they started 4-0 in 2008.

More details on Maine's upcoming schedule will be released tomorrow morning.
