Maine advances to the America East Championship, defeat Cal 2-1

Second-half comeback sends Maine to Sunday's title tilt with UAlbany

ORONO - The University of Maine field hockey program advanced to the America East Championship for the fourth time in the last fifteen seasons, defeating California with a second-half comeback by a 2-1 final score.

Maine will take on UAlbany on Sunday, the third title-game matchup in the rivalry's history and the first since 2018. The Black Bears are vying for their first conference championship in program history.

Friday's contest began as a frustrating affair for the Black Bears, as a 16-2 advantage in shots in the first half still lead to a 1-0 California lead at the break. The frustration was compounded by a 0-9 effort on corners in the first thirty minutes.

The second half saw the Black Bears step into their game, as Hana Davis put together a beautiful run along the end line before burying a shot past the red-hot California goaltender to tie the game at 1-1 five minutes into the second half.

The 1-1 score held into the final stanza, with Maine still holding a dominant 19-5 advantage on shots through three quarters.

Maine's 18th corner of the day was the one they needed, as Poppy Lambert's initial shot rebounded off the post back onto her stick, and she buried the go-ahead goal with 12 minutes remaining.

The Black Bears' defense remained dominant, closing the game out without Cal registering a shot in the fourth quarter. Maine ended with a 28-5 advantage on shots and a 19-1 advantage on corners, with nearly the entire game taking place in the Maine offense zone as the Black Bears tried to solve an incredible performance from the Golden Bears' goalkeeper who made 18 saves on the day.

With the 2-1 win, and UAlbany's 1-0 upset win over the No. 2-seeded Monmouth program, the Danes and Bears will match up for the America East title this Sunday in Orono at 1:00.m
