Men's Hockey Earns Hockey East Victory at Vermont, 4-3

Burlington, Vermont - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the University of Vermont Catamounts, 4-3, on Saturday Afternoon in the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

First Goal (1-0 Maine): On the power play 7:22 into the first period, Eduards Tralmaks gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead. Ben Poisson had his shot saved from the right side circle. Adam Dawe collected the rebound and back handed his shot off the post. Tralmaks smacked the loose puck into the back of Vermont's net. Maine grabbed an early 1-0 lead.

Second Goal (2-0 Maine): Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup added to the Maine lead with a goal of his own on the power play. John Mulera and Emil Westerlund both had their shots saved. Schmidt-Svejstrup collected Westerlund's shot and doubled the Black Bears' lead.

Third Goal (3-0 Maine): Trying to dump the puck back into the Vermont zone, Adam Dawe scored the third goal of the first period. Dawe's shot trickled between Tyler Harmon's legs and into the Catamounts' net. After 20:00, Maine held a 3-0 lead.

Fourth Goal (3-1 Maine): Simon Boyko scored the Catamounts' first goal of the Saturday afternoon contest. Andrew Lucas set up the scoring play for Vermont as they trailed by two heading into the second intermission.

Fifth Goal (4-1 Maine): On an odd man rush with Donavan Villeneuve-Houle, JD Greenway scored his first goal of the 2020-21 season. The defenseman threw the puck on net. Looking like he had made the save, Gabe Carriere carried the puck into his own net. Early in the third period, the Black Bears grabbed a three goal lead.

Sixth Goal (4-2 Maine): From the blue line, Christan Evers pulled his squad to within two goals. On the power play, Ray Vitolins found Evers. With traffic in front, Victor Ostman was unable to find the puck. Halfway through the third period, Vermont, once again, trailed by two scores.

Seventh Goal (4-3 Maine): Off of the face-off, Evers scored his second goal of the game, fourth of the weekend. Vitolins won the face-off to Evers. The forward fired the puck and found the back of the net. It was as close as the Catamounts would get as Maine held off the late charge for its first win of the 2020-21 season.

Notes: Victor Ostman stopped 29 shots for the Black Bears, Tyler Harmon tallied 10 saves for Vermont in the first period before Gabe Carriere went the rest of the way and made 14 stops.

Maine went 2 for 3 on their power play opportunities, as the Catamounts were 1-6 on their player advantages.

The Black Bears blocked 14 shots as a team.

Next: Maine is scheduled to return to the ice next Friday, January 15th against Providence.
