Men's Hockey Upsets #16/NR Providence in Rhode Island, 4-3

Providence, Rhode Island - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the #16/NR Providence College Friars, 4-3, on Friday Afternoon in the Schneider Arena.

First Goal (1-0 #16/NR Providence): On the power play 11:16 into the first period, Max Crozier gave the Friars a 1-0 lead. Jason O'Neill found his partner on the unit who did the rest. The defenseman gave Providence an early 1-0 lead.

Second Goal (1-1): Ben Poisson's second of the year tied the Hockey East contest at one goal apiece halfway through the second period. Eduards Tralmaks had his shot saved. The loose puck sat in front of the Friars' net. Poisson put his stick on the puck and into the back of the net.

Third Goal (2-1 #16/NR Providence): The Friars grabbed their lead back less than five minutes later. Michael Callahan's shot caught everyone on the Black Bears off guard and trickled into the net. Halfway through the second period, Providence once again held a one goal lead.

Fourth Goal (2-2): Brady Gaudette scored his first career goal halfway through the third period to tie the game at two goals apiece. John Mulera stole the puck at half ice. The freshman dished it off to Gaudette who did the rest.

Fifth Goal (3-2 Maine): With Jakub Sirota starting the rush, Poisson scored his second goal of the afternoon. Adam Dawe made a nifty move to give Poisson all the space he needed. The sophomore forward gave Maine a lead late in the final frame.

Sixth Goal (4-2 Maine): Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup added an empty net goal to give his squad a two goal lead that they would not give up.

Seventh Goal (4-3 Maine): Uula Ruikka scored one final goal for the Friars with 00:20 left in the contest. It was too little too late as the Black Bears would hold onto their one goal lead for their second win of the 2020-21 season.

Notes: Victor Ostman stopped 37 shots for the Black Bears, Jaxson Stauber tallied 26 saves for Providence.

Maine went 0 for 2 on their power play opportunities, as the Friars were 2-5 on their player advantages.
