PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by the Providence Friars, 3-2, on Saturday evening in Schneider Arena.
First Goal (#19 Providence 1-0): After his two minute tripping penalty expired, Jack Dugan sprinted out of the penalty box. The sophomore forward stole the puck and scored an unassisted goal. With 5:05 left in the first period, the Friars held a 1-0 lead.
Second Goal (#19 Providence 2-0): By forcing a turnover deep in the Maine zone, Jason O'Niell was able to give his squad a brief two goal lead. Shane Kavanagh found O'Niell, who had found his way behind the Black Bears' defense. Halfway through the second period, Providence had a 2-0 lead.
Third Goal (#19 Providence 2-1): 00:20 after the Friars had extended their lead, Maine finally found the score column.
Adam Dawe relentlessly pursued the puck. The sophomore forward played the puck to the front of Providence's net. Jacob Schmidt-Svjestrup fired a shot that was saved by Michael Lackey. With chaos in the crease,
Adrien Bisson was easily able to score his second goal of the 2019-2020 season. After two complete, Maine trailed by a goal.
Fourth Goal (#19 Providence 3-1): 33 seconds into the third period, Greg Printz once again extended the Friars lead to two.
Jeremy Swayman made the initial save, but the rebound was made available for Printz.
Fifth Goal (#19 Providence 3-2): Emil Westerlund scored his first goal of the season with just over six minutes left in the Hockey East contest.
Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi fired a shot towards Lackey. The puck deflected off Westerlund's foot and into the back of the net. After a lengthy review, the goal was confirmed.
With Swayman pulled in the final two minutes of the game, Maine was unable to find an equalizer. The Friars held onto their one goal advantage for a 3-2 victory.
Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 30 saves for the Black Bears, while Michael Lackey tallied 24 for the Friars.
Maine went 0-2 on the power play, as Providence was 1-3 on their man advantages.
The Black Bears blocked nine shots as a team.
Next: Maine returns to the ice next Saturday, March 6th at the Alfond Arena for senior night. Puck drop against Providence is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
