LAST TIME OUT
  • Maine dropped their first America East conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the Stony Brook Seawolves came into the Cross Insurance Center and handed the Black Bears a 73-52 loss.
  • The Black Bears trailed 35-24 at the half, but came out strong with an 8-2 run to start the second half, started by an Andrew Fleming dunk and capped by a Fleming three-pointer to make it a 37-31 game. That was as close as Maine would get however, as Stony Brook put together a 25-7 run over the next 6:30 to put this one out of reach, cruising the rest of the way to the 21-point victory.
  • Nedeljko Prijovic paced the Maine offense with 17 points on 7-15 shooting from the field. He also added in four rebounds, a steal, and a block.
  • Andrew Fleming followed Thursday night's 26-point performance against Columbia with a seven point, five rebound, two assist performance on the afternoon.
  • Miks Antoms put together a solid effort off the bench with eight points and a team high seven boards.
  • Stony Brook held the advantage in rebounds (38-34), steals (15-5), points off turnovers (31-14), and fast break points (21-16).

MAINE LEADERS
  • Andrew Fleming, who has registered double-digit scoring totals in 11 of Maine's first 15 games, guides the Black Bears, ranking sixth in the America East with 15.9 points per game to go along with a team-high 6.3 rebounds.
  • Sergio El Darwich joins Fleming in double-figures, adding 11.2 points and 5.0 rebounds, and sits fifth in the conference with 3.5 assists a game and second in the America East with 1.7 steals a game.
  • Steph Ingo ranks sixth in the conference with 1.1 blocks a game.

A LOOK AT UNH
  • The Wildcats have broke even so far with a 7-7 overall record, including an 0-1 start in the America East, but they've posted a perfect 5-0 record at home so far this year. They've notched wins over common opponents Central Connecticut State (11/19, 77-63), Maine Maritime (12/4, 91- 37), and Dartmouth (12/30, 70-56), and fell to UConn on December 22 by an 88-62 final.
  • Nick Guadarrama leads the offense with 15.1 points per game, ninthbest in the conference, and sits second in the conference with 8.6 rebounds a game. He's already notched six double-doubles, best in the conference and 30th most across NCAA Division I.
  • Rebounding and ball movement is the theme for the Wildcats. They lead the conference in rebounds per game (43.0) and rebounding margin (+7.9) as well as assists per game (15.1).
  • Their 30.93 defensive rebounds per game rank third nationally, as does their total rebounds per game mark, and Sean Sutherlin leads the conference with 8.7 boards a game.
  • Bill Herrion leads the Wildcats for the 15th season, with a 172-251 (.407) career record. He's nearing the record for coaching victories at New Hampshire, currently held by Gerry Friel who amassed 185 wins in 20 seasons during the 70s and 80s.

MOVE THE BALL
  • Maine currently ranks first in the America East and seventh in the nation in assist to field goal percentage, registering an assist on 65.4% of their field goal makes this year. The next closest America East team is Albany, who sits at 43rd overall with an assist on 58.3% of their field goals.

TRAILBLAZING CURRY - NEW YORK TIMES
  • Assistant Coach Edniesha Curry is the only full-time female coaching men's basketball in NCAA Division I. Across all of Division I men's sports, only 4% of coaches are female. Even in just women's sports, only 42% of coaches are female. Coach Curry, along with Head Coach Carol Hutchins of Michigan University softball and Meredith Flaherty a 4th year PhD candidate at the University of Florida Department of Sport Management, discussed the issue with the New York Times in an interview available here; https://nyti.ms/36b4URH

A TOP TEN MAN
  • Andrew Fleming drew up from way beyond the three-point line and sank the shot with a defender draped over him to giving Maine a 75-72 overtime victory over Columbia University last Thursday evening at the Cross Insurance Center, and the play was given the #3 spot on that evening's edition Sports Center's top-ten plays countdown.
  • This is Fleming's second appearance on ESPN, joining his historic performance in January of last year where he tied an America East record with 18 field goals made against UMass Lowell.

INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR
  • Maine features one of the youngest rosters in the America East this season with seven freshmen on their bench this year. Of those seven, six different nations are represented, as Maine features players from Canada, Denmark, Sweden, Serbia, Turkey, and the United States. Overall, Maine has representatives from ten different countries, with Lebanon, Latvia, Ukraine, and England being represented as well.
