4/9/2019 12:22:00 PM | Baseball
BOSTON – After allowing just one run in 8 1/3 innings against UMBC on Saturday, the America East announced on Tuesday that senior right-handed pitcher Nick Silva has been named the conference's pitcher of the week.
Â
Silva struck out seven, while walking four (one intentional) and scattered three hits in Maine's 2-1 victory in the 2019 home opener against the Retrievers. The only earned run he allowed came on a passed ball in the third inning. Trevor DeLaite came into the game in relief in the ninth to get the final two outs and earn the save against UMBC.
Â
The Miami native faced the minimum in five different innings on the day. The honor marks the second time this season he has been named pitcher of the week. He was previously earned the honor after tossing eight scoreless frames in the conference opener against Binghamton. The award is Silva's fifth career pitcher of the week honor and sixth conference weekly award overall.
Â
Silva and the Black Bears are back in action this weekend, hosting UMass Lowell for a three-game weekend series at Mahaney Diamond. Admission is free, and all three games will be broadcasted on ESPN+ and can be heard locally on 92.9 WGUY FM.
