LYNCHBURG, Va. – After leading 2-0 after three innings, the Liberty Flames posted two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth inning, as the University of Maine Baseball team dropped the series finale by a score of 7-1 in a weather shortened contest on Sunday afternoon at Liberty Baseball Stadium.
Â
Danny Casals and Cody Pasic both registered singles in the contest, while Colin Ridley reached base twice on two walks. Caleb Kerbs, Joe Bramanti and Jeffrey Omohundro also reached base via base on balls. Pasic tallied the lone Maine RBI on a sac-fly to centerfield in the seventh inning.
Â
Ben Terwilliger (0-1) made his first career start on the mound for Maine, allowing five hits and two earned runs in three innings pitched, while striking out one and walking two Flames.
Â
After both teams could not muster a base runner in the first inning, Liberty would plate a run in the second inning, as a leadoff Liberty double would cross home plate on a single with no outs in the second. Terwilliger would get the next two batters out to avoid further damage.
Â
A bunt single by Pasic down the third-base line gave Maine its first hit of the contest. The native of Cotuit, Mass. would steal second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. However, back-to-back groundouts and a line-out to first would strand Pasic on third base without tying the score.
Â
The Flames would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third and doubled their lead to four after two-run single in the fourth frame after Jacob Small came in the ball game to pitch in the beginning of the inning.
Â
Nicholas Sinacola entered the game on the mound for Maine in the fifth, as a he walked the first batter he faced, but a 6-4-3 double play and a ground-out to the pitcher ended the frame without any damage.
Â
After the Black Bears went down in order, the Flames would score three runs on three hits as Matt Geoffrion would get the last two outs in the inning after walking the first two batters he faced, as Liberty took a 7-0 lead after six innings.
Â
The Black Bears scored their lone run in the seventh inning, as Casals earned a one-out single and Ridley was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Bramanti followed and earned a walk to load the bases. Pasic smacked a sac-fly to center field to score Casals. Omohundro loaded the bases with a walk, but a strikeout ended the chance to significantly cut into the Flames' lead.
Â
A Liberty walk and single put runners on the corners with no outs, as Maine looked to switch pitchers, but the game was halted due to the weather.
The Black Bears will head to nationally-ranked Mississippi State for a three-game weekend series beginning on Friday. First pitch against the Bulldogs on Friday is set for 7:30 p.m. All three games will be broadcasted on SEC Network Plus.
