BOSTON – After not allowing a run in nine innings pitched this last week, the America East announced on Tuesday afternoon that senior right handed pitcher Nick Silva was selected as the conference pitcher of the week.
Silva opened America East play for the Black Bears on the mound on Sunday, and did not allow a single run in eight innings of work in his first win of the season in game one against Binghamton. He scattered six hits and three walks, while striking out two Bearcats in the outing.
With Silva eclipsing 100 pitches in the bottom of the eighth, the Bearcats were able to load the bases with two outs. Silva was able to force a softly hit line-out to that he caught to escape the jam without a run allowed.
Dillon Stimpson entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and completed the combined shutout. The game marked Maine's first shutout of an opponent since May 26, 2017, when the Black Bears defeated Stony Brook 3-0 in the Black Bears' third game of the America East Championships. Silva also started that game, pitching 8 2/3 innings before Jeff Gelinas earned the final out of the contest.
Silva also appeared against Troy last week, pitching the eighth inning. He did not allow a hit while striking out two Trojans.
The award marks his fourth career weekly award from the America East, previously being named the pitcher of the week on March 13, 2018, February 21, 2017 and February 28, 2017. He earned conference rookie of the week honors on May 3, 2016.
Maine continues America East play on Saturday, when the Black Bears open a three-game series with a doubleheader against Stony Brook. First pitch of game one at Joe Nathan Field is slated for noon on Long Island.
