Softball Battles in Two Games at the Cardinal Classic

BEAUMONT, Texas -- The University of Maine softball team dropped a double-header on Saturday evening at the LU Softball Complex to Lamar University, 7-2, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, 3-0.

Lamar University started off the scoring in the first inning as Kelly Meeuwsen stole second base after hitting a single to lead off the game. Meeuwsen would score the run when Elizabeth Castillo got caught stealing second. They led 1-0 after the first.
 
Laurine German laced a triple to begin the bottom of the fourth. The Black Bears tied the game with Alyssa Derrick's single up the middle to score German.
 
In the top of the sixth, Maddy Myers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kimberly Mattox walked to score Jade Lewis and give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Taylor Davis broke through with a 2-run single. After a sacrifice fly by Meeuswen, the Cardinals would be ahead 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth.
 
German blasted a a solo home-run over the left-field wall and the Black Bears were behind 5-2 after six.
 
An error and a wild pitch equaled two runs in the top of the seventh for Lamar. Maine went 1-2-3 in their half of the inning, which resulted in the Black Bears losing the first game of the afternoon.
 
Notes:
  • Gabbie Siciliano received a no-decision after she went 3.0 innings and allowed one earned run. Emily Reid (0-1) pitched the final 4.0 innings, as she allowed six runs, four earned.
  • Jade Lewis started the game and pitched 4.0 innings for the Cardinals. Lewis allowed one earned run and 4 hits to the Black Bears. Erin Kyle (3-0) pitched 3.0 innings of relief allowing one run and striking out three.  
 
UTSA 3, UMAINE 0
 
The University of San Antonio jumped on top early in the game. Paige Pacher opened the scoring in the second inning with a triple that brought Brycen Blinco home. Celeste Loughman gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead with an RBI single.
 
The Roadrunners finished off the scoring in the top of the 7th as Elexus Trenkle reached on an error as scored Hannah Boring from second. UTSA scored their third run of the game which proved all to much for Maine.
 
The Black Bears defensively held strong as they caused the Roadrunners to strand two runners on base every inning except the 4th and 7th. Unable to mount a comeback, Maine fell to 0-4 on the short season.

Notes:  
Next: The Black Bears drop to 0-4 and will return to the diamond tomorrow, Sunday February 24th to take on University of Rhode Island to conclude the 2019 Cardinal Classic at the LU Softball Complex. First pitch of the contest is at 10 a.m.
