COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maine baseball team could not get the bats going until near the end of the second contest, falling in both ends of a doubleheader against Maryland. Maryland took the opener 4-0, and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-3 victory at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Friday.
Maine falls to 0-6 on the season, while Maryland improves to 3-2 with the two victories on Friday.
Senior
Caleb Kerbs reached base a combined five times in doubleheader, recording three singles, while walking and earning a HBP once each. Classmate
Colin Ridley also earned three hits with two base knocks and a double, driving in one run.
Joe Bramanti tallied a clutch single that drove in a run. Freshman
Mike Sabatine registered two hits in his first two collegiate at bats. Fellow first-year
Ryan Turenne tallied a double, while freshman
Jake Roper and junior
Hernen Sardinas each drove in a run on the day.
In game one after Maine went down in order, a Randy Bednar solo shot to center gave the Terrapins an early 1-0 advantage.
Nicholas Sinacola (0-1) settled down to strikeout the final batter of the inning.
The Black Bears put on two runners in the second inning on a walk and HBP, but a ground-out would end to first would end the frame. Maryland did not tally a hit in the second, but a HBP, advanced to third base, but he would be stranded.
After Maine went down 1-2-3 in the third inning, the Terrapins, took advantage of a walk, singling home a run with one out in the frame. Maryland put another runner in scoring position in the inning, but a strikeout concluded the inning with limited damage.
For the second-straight inning, Maryland tallied a single run, as a sac-fly made it 3-0 Maryland with a single out in the inning. That would be all for the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, as Sinacola completed his second collegiate outing with 3.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and three earned runs, while walking two and striking out three.
Matthew Pushard entered the game on the mound, as he stranded a runner on third with a fielder's choice.
Ridley registered a double with two outs in the top of the fifth, but a strikeout ended any chance of driving him in. Maryland added its final run of game one on an error in the bottom half of the inning.
Maine had an opportunity to put runs on the scoreboard with back-to-back singles from Kerbs and Ridley, as a Roper sac-bunt moved both runners into scoring position. A strikeout followed by a ground-out denounced the threat to score a run.
Matt Geoffrion, who came into the contest in the bottom of the seventh, battled back from allowing an inning-opening double in the eighth inning by forcing a fly-out and striking out the last two Maryland batters of the contest. Maine could not get a run across in the ninth dropping the opening game by a score of 4-0.

The Terrapins opened the second game of the doubleheader with two runs in the bottom of the first, as two-run double with two outs in the inning gave the Terps an early 2-0 lead.
Peter Kemble (0-1) retired the first two batters he faced in the frame, but a walk and a single setup the double to do damage.
The Black Bears looked the threaten in the top of the second, as Kerbs and Ridley recorded back-to-back singles to put runners at first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, but a fly-out ended the inning without a run crossing the plate.
Kemble did not allow a hit in the second frame, but a batter earned a spot on the basepaths on hit-by-pitch, as the runner stole second and then third base in the inning. Kemble struck-out a batter with two outs to avoid a Terp score.
Maine could not get anything going in the third frame, as Kemble, a Bangor native would let up an unearned run in the third inning. An error on an errant throw by Turenne to third base allowed Maryland's third run to score. He finished the contest with four innings pitched, four hits allowed, three earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
Ben Terwilliger entered the contest in his second appearance this season in the fifth inning. After allowing a double with one out, Terwilliger rallied to strikeout the next two Terrapins to escape the inning unscathed.
Maine went down in order in the sixth, as Maryland was able to single home a runner with two outs in inning to extend its lead over the Black Bears at 4-0. With runners on second and third, Terwilliger got out of a jam with a pop-out to left to end the inning with limited damage.
The bats finally came alive in the seventh inning for Maine, as Turenne recorded his first career double with one out to put himself in scoring position. Kerbs followed with a single, as Turenne moved to third to put runners on the corners. Ridley ended Maine's 16-inning scoreless streak, as a ground-out to second base, scored Turenne and moved Kerbs to third to make the game 4-1. Roper followed with a single to center, sending home Kerbs to cut the deficit to just 4-2.
Terwilliger allowed a run in the seventh, as his day on the mound ended on a RBI single.
Dillon Stimpson entered the game briefly, earning a foul-out and. Walked a batter to load the bases.
Trevor DeLaite entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs, throwing three consecutive strikes to get the Black Bears out of trouble.
Maine got two runners aboard after two errors in the eighth by the Terps. With
Jeffrey Omohundro and Sardinas on the corners, Bramanti singled home Omohundro to make the contest just a two-run game at 5-3. A hard-hit line-out by Turenne turned into a double-play, as Maine could not get tack on another run in the inning. DeLaite stayed in the game for the Black Bears, striking out two in a 1-2-3 inning.
Kerbs got on the basepaths for the third time of the game on a walk in the ninth, but Maine could not drive him home, falling to the Terrapins by a score of 5-3.
Maine and Maryland will have the day off tomorrow for weather, before completing the series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
