Portland, Maine --
Maeve Carroll and
Blanca Millan each tallied double-doubles to help guide the Black Bears to a 46-41 win over Navy at the Portland Expo on Sunday afternoon.
Carroll registered her first career double-double with 10 points and a career best 14 boards. Millan bested 20 points for the 30th time in her career, notching her fourth career double-double with 25 points while matching a career-high with 11 rebounds. Millan registered 20 of her 25 points in the first half, scoring 20 of Maine's 27 first half points.
The Black Bears, who have now won each of their last five games in Portland, snapped their three-game losing skid while moving their record to 2-3. Navy, coming off a win at Vermont, fell to 2-3 on the year.
Maine was efficient from inside, going 12-of-22 from inside the arc, but struggled from 3-point range after shooting 5-for-34 from downtown. The Black Bears assisted on 13 of their 17 field goals, led by a season-high six assists from
Dor Saar.
Maine trailed through the opening eight minutes of action before snatching its first lead with 2:19 left in the first. Trailing by four, Millan knocked down a pair of free throws before sticking a triple off a feed from Saar to put Maine up, 10-9.
The Black Bears, who outscored Navy 15-8 in the second period, trailed by two early in the quarter before putting together a 10-2 run. Five in a row from Millan gave the Black Bears a three point lead. Saar answered a Navy bucket with a triple before Carroll's layup in the lane extended Maine's lead to six, its largest of the first half. Maine would enter the break with a 27-21 advantage.
The lead shrunk to a pair as Navy came out of the halftime break with a 4-0 run. But Maine would respond, putting together a 7-2 sprint capped on a triple from Saar, extending the lead out to seven with 2:25 left in the third.
Maine entered the fourth quarter with a 36-30 lead. Back-to-back jumpers from Millan and Carroll gave Maine its largest lead of the game, 42-32, with 6:17 on the clock.
Navy kept charging. Navy capitalized on a Maine turnover with a three, trimming the Black Bears' advantage to just three with under two minutes remaining. Maine's shot attempt on the ensuing possession was blocked by a Navy defender. The Mids raced down the floor but came up short on a jumper. A loose ball foul was drawn by McVicar, giving possession to Maine. Saar's short jumper moved the lead to five. Navy had a missed shot and a pair of turnovers on its next two possessions as Maine was able to dribble the clock out, sealing the 46-41 win for the Black Bears.
Maine returns to action on Nov. 29 when it opens the Gulf Coast Classic against Arizona State in Estero, Fla.
