Maine prepare to take on Portland in first test of West Coast swing

PORTLAND, OR. - The University of Maine men's basketball program heads as far west as they'll go in the lower-48 this season, traveling to take on the University of Portland Pilots at the Chiles Center on Saturday night.

MAINE GAME NOTES
  • Maine got their season off to a 1-0 start with a 20-point win over Merrimack College, but fell to Harvard on the road last Sunday by a 67-46 final score to fall to 1-1 on the year. 
  • Sergio El Darwich put up a solid performance against the Crimson on Sunday, with 18 points, four assists, and three rebounds in the loss. He's averaging 15.0 points and 5.0 assists per contest so far. 
  • Despite some foul trouble in his last outing that caused him to only log 10 points, Andrew Fleming still leads the roster by a wide margin with a 23.5 points per game average so far. 
  • Junior Nedeljko Prijovic has been a beast on the boards, averaging a team-high 11.5 rebounds after putting up his first career double-double against Harvard with 11 points and 12 boards. 
  • As a team, Maine has remained solid at the free-throw line, putting up a 75.0% (30-40) mark so far this season.
PORTLAND PRIMER
  • The Pilots have started the year 2-1, notching a win over Willamette (86-36) to start the season before falling to USC (76-65), but bounced back on Sunday with a 72-57 victory over San Jose State on the road.
  • Picked to finish 10th in the West Coast Conference Preaseason Coaches Poll, the team returns two starters, nine lettermen, and adds in five newcomers in 2019-20.
  • Of those newcomers, Isaiah White is a name Maine fans will remember. White was second on the Main team last year with 13.5 points per game, and is averaging 16.7 points per game for the Pilots so far, a team-high.
  • The Pilots have shot the ball well so far this season, putting up a team split of 46.3/43.2/65.9 so far.
  • Jacob Tyron sits third in the West Coast Conference with 1.3 blocks per game, while Chase Adams is tied for the conference lead in steals per game with 3.0.
  • 17-year NBA veteran player and former NBA head coach Terry Porter was named the 21st basketball head coach in Pilot history in April of 2016, as he leads Portland in his fourth season at the helm.
