Men's Ice Hockey Drops First Game of the Season at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was defeated by #7/#6 Providence College, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in the Schneider Arena.
 
First Goal (Providence 1-0): The Friars scored on a 5-on-3 advantage 2:30 into the first period. Vimal Sukumaran forced the puck into the net. After a lengthy review, the officials ruled that the play was not blown dead and the net was not off its mark. Providence led 1-0 very early into the conference match-up.
 
Second Goal (Providence 2-0): Having just fought off approximately three minutes of penalty minutes, the Black Bears we looking to get the puck out of their zone. Jack Dugan corralled the puck, found some open space, and extended the Friars' lead to two goals.
 
Third Goal (Providence 3-0): Greg Printz added to the Providence lead when he found the back of the net six minutes into the second period. The Friars' counter attack was executed to perfection after Maine applied pressure on Michael Lackey. Maine trailed 3-0 less than halfway through the second period.
 
Fourth Goal (Providence 4-0): Providence College put one more on the board in the second period as Tyce Thompson fired a wrister that found its way to the back of the net. The Friars had a commanding four goal lead after two complete periods.
 
Fifth Goal (Providence 5-0): Greg Printz scored his second and the Friars' fifth of the afternoon after the Black Bears turned the puck over behind their own net. The forward was left unmarked when he received and buried the pass.
 
Sixth Goal (Providence 6-0): To finish the hat trick, Printz snuck home a shot on their seventh power play. 
 
Seventh Goal (Providence 7-0): Printz found another goal to pad the Friars' lead to seven. Providence's final goal came with 5:21 remaining in the contest.
 
The 7-0 score would stand as Maine dropped their first regular season and conference game of the 2019-20 season.
 
Notes: Jeremy Swayman finished with 52 saves, while Michael Lackey tallied 29 for Providence.
 
Maine went 0-4 on the power play, as the Friars were 2-8 on their man advantages.
 
The Black Bears blocked 12 shots as a team.
 
Next: The Black Bears will host the University of New Brunswick tomorrow, October 6th, in an exhibition. Puck-drop in the Alfond is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
