Orono, Maine – University of Maine head football coach
Joe Harasymiak has announced the promotion of
Nick Charlton to the role of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Â
"We are excited about Nick taking the next step within our program and becoming our next offensive coordinator," said Harasymiak. "He is very familiar with our system but at the same time will bring his own identity to that group. We are excited for what the future holds with Nick."
Â
Charlton, who will begin his fourth season on the UMaine football staff in 2018, was elevated to special teams coordinator in April of 2016. Under his guidance, the Black Bears ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) leaders in kick return offense in back-to-back seasons. His instruction has produced five all-conference special teams honors, the most in the league over the three year period, while
Earnest Edwards (kick return) and
Micah Wright (punt return) each produced conference-leading seasons in the return game.
Â
In addition to his special teams duties, Charlton, who joined the Black Bears staff in 2015, has served as Maine's wide receivers coach. In 2017, Charlton helped lead a Maine offense which ranked third in the CAA in total production. During his three years mentoring Maine's wideouts, Charlton has assisted in developing players to three all-conference honors, including in 2015 when he guided
Micah Wright to one of the best statistical seasons by a Maine freshmen in school history.
Â
Prior to joining the Black Bears, Charlton spent three years at Boston College as a graduate assistant under head coach Steve Addazio and offensive coordinator Ryan Day. During his tenure with the Eagles, Charlton worked with the offensive staff, specifically focusing on the quarterbacks in 2014, including mentoring Tyler Murphy to one of the most prolific seasons at quarterback in Atlantic Coast Conference history. In 2013, Charlton served as part of the offensive staff which helped mentor Heisman Trophy finalist Andre Williams, three future National Football League offensive linemen and Boston College's all-time leading receiver, Alex Amidon.
Â
Charlton graduated from Boston College in 2011 with a Bachelor's degree in philosophy before receiving his Master's degree from Boston College's Wood School of Advancing Studies.
Â
He and his wife, Maria, welcomed their first child, Madeline, in October of 2017.
