WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Women's hockey senior
Brooke Stacey has been named the Women's Hockey East Player of the Week after netting a hat trick and assisting on the game-winner in Maine's comeback, overtime win over Boston University in the decisive game three of a conference quarterfinal series on Sunday at Alfond Arena.
Stacey scored all three goals of her first career hat trick in a span of seven-minute span in the third period to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to overtime where she tallied the primary assist on Tereza Vanišová's game-winning goal. The weekly award is the first of Stacey's career and Maine's fifth of the season.
The Black Bears faced a three-goal deficit with 12 minutes to play in the third period but by the 4:28 mark, the game was all tied up thanks to Stacey.
First, she crashed the net and stayed on a loose puck, reaching around to the far post to poke it through with 11:28 to play. Three minutes and two seconds later, Vanišová started a rush up the right wing and into the BU zone. She fed
Michelle Weis at the top of the circle and Weis backhanded a pass across the crease where Stacey slammed it home at the left post. Stacey scored her third goal – and completed the natural hat trick – exactly seven minutes after she had started Maine's comeback after she picked off the puck in the high slot, turned to her forehand and wristed the puck into the top left corner of the net.
Just under five minutes into overtime,
Alyson Matteau sent Stacey up the right wing with the puck. When she got to the right dot, Stacey looked to find Vanišová entering the slot for a one-timer.
Stacey has now had a hand in 10 game-winning goals this season (four goals, six assists). She has 13 goals and 17 assist for 30 points this season, good fo second on the team.
With the win, Maine (19-13-5, 10-9-4 WHEA) earned its first ever postseason series victory and will now play Northeastern in the conference tournament semifinal on Saturday, March 3.
Also this year,
Michelle Weis has two Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week honors (10/2, 11.13) while
Loryn Porter has one (10/16) and
Carly Jackson has a Defensive Player of the Week award (1/8).
