Green Bay, Wis. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped to 2-2 on the year following a 70-39 loss at Green Bay on Tuesday evening. The Black Bears, who trailed by six after the second quarter, were outscored 46-21 in the second half.
Blanca Millan paced Maine's scoring with 11 points, her fourth-straight game in double-digits.
Tanesha Sutton added eight while
Maddy McVicar hit a pair of threes, chipping in seven points off the bench.
Green Bay, who statistically was the top team in the NCAA a year ago in terms of scoring defense, limited Maine to a 14-for-47 night from the field, including a 6-for-29 mark from three-point range. The Phoenix controlled action inside, outrebounding Maine 41-22 while outscoring the Black Bears 36-6 in the paint.
Both teams were slow to get the offense rolling with 16 total points tallied in the first quarter. Sutton's jumper midway through the first quarter extended Maine's early lead to three.
However, Green Bay ended the half with a 5-0 run and started the second with a 5-0 sprint as the Phoenix put together a 10-0 swing to take a 14-7 lead.
Maine responded out of a timeout with another jumper from Sutton as the senior's bucket started a 6-0 Black Bear run, trimming the deficit back down to one.
The Phoenix ended the half with a 4-0 run as Mackenzie Wolf's bucket at the buzzer sent Maine into the break trailing by six, 24-18.
Green Bay came out of the half and was able to put together an 18-6 run, extending its lead out to 20 before Saar's second triple of the game ended the streak.
Maine continued to fight as McVicar came off the bench to chip in seven fourth quarter points, including back-to-back triples late in the final period. The Black Bears were unable to close the gap down in the fourth, falling to the Phoenix by a final of 70-39.
The Black Bears continue road action on Saturday when they travel to the Naval Academy to take part in the 2018 Navy Classic. Maine will take on North Carolina A&T on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. before meeting Penn, also at 3:15 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 25.
